The Gift Workshop - Liverpool - 22nd Dec
THE GIFT … A hands on, creative clay experience with an emphasis on creating with intention.
22nd December St Bride’s Church, Liverpool 6pm-8pm
What if this Christmas, instead of buying another thing, you gave someone an experience they would remember for years to come?
Something totally unique, meaningful and with references to our ancient past.
On the evening of 22nd December at 6pm until 8pm, just as we pass through the Winter Solstice, I will be transforming the magnificent St Bride’s Church, a Greco-Egyptian temple like building into a beautiful space for an intimate evening of creativity.
And I would LOVE you to join me!
THE GIFT is an experience inspired by an instinctual human desire stretching back 40,000 years (that we know of). The making of small figurines, depicting the female form, whose meanings remain something of a mystery.
Some of the earliest known female figurines date back an astonishing 35,000 to 40,000 years. One of the oldest, the Venus of Hohle Fels, was discovered in a cave in Germany in 2008, carved from mammoth ivory during the last Ice Age. Just imagine, someone created this tiny representation of a woman almost 40,000 years ago, and it has survived all this time! This is just one of thousands that have been found all over the world!
I have become completely fascinated by these ancient objects and the women or goddesses they may have represented. Now I want to invite you to experience the simple but surprisingly powerful act of making one yourself.
With clay in your hands, you will create your own little figure, an offering to honour, celebrate or remember someone or something precious to you.
Perhaps it’s a gift to yourself. A celebration of the woman you are becoming. A tribute to your mother, your daughter, a friend, an ancestor, someone you have lost. With your intentions you might weave in hope, prayers, reverence, awe, life accomplishment or simply create a beautiful little object carrying your wishes and intentions into the coming year.
And what better time to do this than the Winter Solstice?
The Winter Solstice marks the shortest day and longest night of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. For at least 5,000 years, probably longer, humans have been building monuments that acknowledge this turning point in the solar calendar.
The longest night. The return of the light. The beginning of a new cycle.
There is something poignant about gathering together at this time of year, inside a beautiful old church, surrounded by candlelight, with warming teas, delicious little delights and the pleasure of creating something entirely with your own hands.
Bring your mother. Bring your daughter. Bring your sister or your best friend. Make it a Christmas treat together or surprise someone with a ticket as an early Christmas present.
Or come by yourself, you will be in lovely company.
You don’t need to be an artist. In fact, I encourage you to forget everything you think you know about making art. This is about intention... creating for, in celebration of or just thinking about women.
And at the end of the evening, you will take home your own little figurine. Something completely unique, made by you, carrying a meaning that no shop-bought gift ever could.
And the whole experience is just £33.
All materials, guidance, warming teas and festive delights are included.
I can’t think of a lovelier way to spend an evening in the days before Christmas. Away from the shops, the noise and the endless to-do lists. Doing something that feels genuinely special.
A little bit of ancient history. A little bit of ceremony. A lot of creativity, beauty and connection.
One evening. One beautiful experience. One little object that might mean the world to someone to place on their mantle piece, bed side table or altar.
